JEFFERSON CITY, Mo — The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) is pleased to announce that Division Director of Insurance Company Regulation John Rehagen was recognized with the Missouri Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (MAMIC) Service Award.
Rehagen has served DCI for more than 23 years, beginning his career as a financial analyst in 2003. He became the department’s first captive insurance company manager in 2007, then division director of Insurance Company Regulation in 2014.
“When you look at everything John has accomplished over the past 23 years, it’s easy to see why he’s so respected across the insurance industry,” DCI Director Angela Nelson said. “He brings an incredible amount of knowledge and experience to his work, but what I appreciate most is John’s commitment to doing what’s right for Missourians. We’re fortunate to have him on our team and are extremely proud he received this recognition from the insurance industry.”
“The MAMIC Service Award recognizes someone from within the insurance industry who provides exceptional service to our association and its members,” MAMIC President and General Manager Chris Kesphol said in presenting Rehagen with the award. "John’s mission at the department has always been clear: protecting insureds and the insurance industry in the great state of Missouri."
Throughout his career, Rehagen has played a significant role in shaping insurance regulation at the state, national and international levels, particularly in reinsurance. Through his leadership at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), including serving as chair of its Reinsurance Task Force and the Mutual Recognition of Jurisdictions Working Group, he has helped advance regulatory standards to strengthen insurers' financial stability and protect policyholders in Missouri and across the U.S.
Under his leadership, several significant international reinsurance standards have been implemented, helping to ensure that companies operating in Missouri have access to reinsurance, which ensures claims can be paid. Rehagen also received the NAIC’s Robert Dineen Award in 2024 for outstanding service and contributions to the regulation of insurance, an honor given to only a few state insurance regulators nationally each year.
MAMIC represents mutual insurance companies throughout Missouri and works to promote sound insurance practices, loss prevention and industry collaboration. Its service award recognizes individuals for their contributions to the mutual insurance industry.
DCI is charged with protecting Missouri consumers through oversight of the insurance industry, banks, credit unions, utilities and various professional licensees operating in the state. For more information about the department, please visit our website at dci.mo.gov.
