Complaints
The Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions & Professional Registration investigates complaints made by Missouri consumers who feel they have been treated unfairly by the insurance industry. A by-product of this effort has been the creation of a detailed database documenting many years of consumer concerns. This report presents data on complaints against insurance companies received by Insurance between 2003 and 2005 (data from 1999-2005 is available on-line), and that were closed at the time this report was produced. Complaints are included whether or not they have been resolved and regardless of whether relief was obtained for the complainant.
Complaint data is presented in four sections:
- Complaints by line of business
- Complaints by reason
- Complaint indices reported for the top 40 writers by line of business
- Complaint indices for all companies, by line of business
Eight business lines are included:
- Total property and casualty (excluding accident and health)
- Private passenger automobile
- Homeowners (including farm, mobile home, and personal fire and allied lines)
- Life and annuity
- Accident and health
- Long term care
- Medicare supplement
- HMOs
Complaint indices compare the ratio of complaints to premium for each company to the industry average, for each line of business:
An index of 100 indicates that a company received complaints at a rate equal to the industry average. An index of 10 indicates that a company's complaint ratio is only 10 percent of the industry average, while an index of 235 indicates a complaint ratio is 135 percent greater than the industry average.
"N/A" in the following tables indicates
- the company had complaints but zero or negative premium (correction for overreserves or
- the insurer had a small premium and an index of more than 9,999.
